Crocheted Bubble Baby Blanket

Last weekend was my cousin's baby shower. She's due in Feb and will be having a boy. As a baby shower gift, I decided to surprise her with a hand crocheted baby blanket for the newcomer. I found this pattern from a slew of patterns on a website aptly named crochet patterns central. Tons and tons of crochet patterns there. You should definitely check it out if you like to crochet. Due to a copyright issue, I can't republish the pattern here so you'll just have to click on the link to get to it (don't worry, it's free).

What I like about this pattern is the simplicity, the quickness, and the beautiful design at the end of it all. Below's a picture of the one I crocheted for my cousin. It didn't take me 3 hours like the pattern said... probably double that time, but I'm a slow crocheter. In the one for my cousin, I followed the pattern almost to the tee, with the same type of yarn, the same size hook, and holding two yarns at the same time. It did save me a lot of time doing it this way because each row was almost an inch in height, it seemed. I have also done a few others in the past holding only one yarn and using thinner baby yarn. The outcome came out nice in both ways, but the single thinner yarn took much much longer to make (one of these are pictured on the very top of this post).

The overall size for this one was about 27" by 30". :-) The proud parents-to-be seem to like it. If you have the time to do it, I think it's a really nice gift to give for a baby shower.

Update: 1/21/09 - My cousin had her baby last night. She and the baby is doing great. :-)

You did a beautiful job on your blankets! I too did this pattern a while ago..I am not that good as a crocheter , and I had a little bit of trouble (I am self taught)..but I managed to figure this pattern out. You are right, when working with two yarns together, it makes it go faster and makes a blanket quicker and bigger faster!
I was searching for the pattern again, I had lost it somewhere and when I did a search, your site came up, thank you so much for the link! I am going to go and print it up now..I am going to attempt the pattern again, a friend it having a baby soon. :)

Hi Louise,

Thanks very much. I'm also mostly self taught at crocheting. I've so far made 4 of these blankets, and everyone has loved it so far. Best of luck on your baby blanket gift, I'm sure your friend and the baby will love it.

Thanks for visiting.

in the original pattern they say to "skip 2 chains and continue sc/2dc" i'm confused as to skip 2 chains in between each puff, so do like a puff than two blanks and another puff ? or to chain 2 in between each puff?

So, the puff is actually constructed with two rows. The sc/2dc is all on one chain, so it creates like a lopsided fan, then you skip the 2 chains so you don't end up with extra stitches in the end. I don't know if that helped any, but that's how I understand it. Let me know if you have other questions, and I'll try to answer them as I can. (sorry, it took me so long to reply. vacation...)

I have made several of the bubble blanket. In the very first picture of the blanket( multi color blanket) it has a border. What is the pattern for the border

Hi, it's been a while since I crocheted and gave away that multi-colored blanket. I believe I used one row of the same general bubble pattern (sc/2dc) for every space between bubbles.
